Our opinion

Established at the end of the 18th century in the valley of the Channel, there is more to this farm than meets the eye. With a rustic and typically high-Savoyard appearance, a stone base and wooden facades weathered by time, the interior takes you to another world with large volumes, light wood, large openings, and an abundance of light. Quite the opposite of traditional alpine chalets whose withdrawn interiors are designed to withstand harsh winters. Guests here are free to admire the spectacular beauty of this unspoiled valley, relax in their rooms and meet around the table for dinners with family and friends.

Property owners’ take the floor

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

Our family has always lived in the area. Our great-grandfather, François Baud, was Mayor of Morzine and built the first cable car in the area, the Plenay and the bridge that joins both sides of Morzine. After leaving the workshops of Jean Nouvel, my brother and I decided to devote ourselves to renovating this family farm in the Channel Valley.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

The house is a former farm that was built in 1788 when the Haute-Savoie was part of the kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia. The building respects all the building codes of the time. An entirely symmetrical plan (houses were often shared between two owners) a basement of Dranse stone and a wooden upper floor surmounted by a frame made with trees from the forest upstream. We preserved all these architectural elements during the renovation of the building. We placed the six rooms in the stone basement and kept the existing windows. The living areas are all located on the upper floor. A large library with a staircase connects the basement and the upper floors.

What is its history ?

This former farm has always belonged to our family. It was used to house livestock and store hay and farm equipment during the winter. The roof suffered from heavy snow fall and part of it collapsed in the barn a few winters ago. The renovations helped to fix the roof and bring the entire building together. It now has all the comforts of a modern chalet.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

The house is located in the classified Channel Valley. It is an exceptional and peaceful setting, removed from the hustle and bustle of the village centre. The location of the house brings constant sunshine throughout the year and offers breathtaking views of the entire valley. From the balcony, you can see the points of Nyon and Angollon, the cursed lands that start the chain of Dents Blanches and the mountain passes of Cuidée, Fornet and Cou that lead to Switzerland. Every morning, we serve bread and pastries from the best bakery in the region to our guests.

Places you would personally recommend

During the summer, the Chardonnière hut and the Freytrolles farm sell milk and cheese. A farm below the house sells eggs from its hen house. A trout farm offering very fresh fish is just minutes from the house in the slate valley. In the centre of Morzine, the Satellite Café and the Bec Jaune are definitely worth a visit. Mountain Rehab offers sports massages and yoga classes at home. In summer, the house is a starting point for beautiful hikes such as the Dents Blanches tour, climbing the Cou mountain pass (bordering Switzerland) or the Gold Mines Lake. Winter brings some of the most beautiful off-piste skiing in the region, descending the Fornet pass allows you to arrive directly in the garden of the house from the top of Avoriaz. A ski lift on the grounds that extend behind the property to the forest allows guests to ski on a private track.
