Our opinion

Those who have taken the road to Santiago de Compostela will know the sense of wonder that Aubrac inspires. This old rural region, shaped into immense pastures by farmers and separated by dry stone walls, is unlike any other. The purity of the light, air, and streams, the abundance of nature as winter draws to a close, and the hot days followed by fresh nights all contribute to the magic. La Tuile has had its place here for many centuries, and is no stranger to slowness of time and the virtues of simplicity. Recent renovations have only rejuvenated and beautified the property. With just the right amount of comfort, it has taken on a cheerful and welcoming air. Walkers, lovers of nature and starry skies, and all others will find a place to stay that matches their dreams here.

Property owners’ take the floor

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

When we were newlywed expats with young children, we had the opportunity to take over a farm in Lozère which had been in the family for several centuries. This region, both beautiful and wild, was far from anything we knew. Through this new project, we wanted to share our roots with our children and instil in them a taste for a simple life surrounded by nature.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

La Tuile is a typical farm of the Gévaudan region with all the usual features: a barn, stables, a sheepfold, a bread oven, a pig sty and an inglenook fireplace. The mullioned windows and dovecote, however, are particularly unique and very rare for the region.

What is its history ?

The house has belonged to the same family for at least five hundred years. This is the first time that it has not been inhabited by farmers. The surrounding land still serves as a breeding ground for the famous Aubrac cow. When we arrived in 2014, we carried out major renovations to transform the existing farm into a comfortable home. We took an ecological approach with respect for the property's heritage and local traditions.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

Those staying at La Tuile will find calm, authenticity, modern comfort and tasteful decoration in a wild and unspoiled environment. It is nevertheless close to all amenities and served by fibre optic internet! The house is located between Aubrac and Margeride, two exceptional natural regions waiting to be explored, and along the legendary road to Santiago de Compostela on Via Podiensis route.

Places you would personally recommend

There are plenty of places to visit nearby. Starting in our village, Aumont-Aubrac, Chez Camillou is a Michelin-starred restaurant with chef Cyril Attrazic running the kitchen. Do not miss the Benoît-Chapert cheese dairy at the entrance to the village which is always full; the Boulet butchers which is legendary in the area; or the farmers' market which takes place every Friday on the Place du Foirail. Michel and Sébastien Bras at Le Suquet in Laguiole is also worth a visit. But what we love most of all are the countless hikes in the area (suitable for all levels and ages) picking blueberries, raspberries and blackberries, and mushroom hunting.

Only the first and second floors of the house have been renovated so far (they constitute 150m²). The entrance is through the kitchen which is also serves as the dining room. There is a scullery for the washing machine and freezer. Next comes the living room, followed by a dressing room and toilets. The staircase leads up to the four bedrooms, one of which has an en suite bathroom. There is also an additional shower room and a separate toilet. The attic and the ground floor serve as storage spaces. The outbuildings are not in use, but add to the authentic setting. The property is surrounded by a one hectare garden with a spring and a stream.
