Our opinion

Friendly and warm, this house with solid stone walls is a happy retreat for those looking to disconnect for a while as they rediscover the simple joys of the countryside, the pleasure of sharing and meals with friends on the terrace after walks amongst the vineyards.

Property owners’ take the floor

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

A large part of our family come from the area, but that is not the only reason we decided to settle in this hilly, green region close to the cities of Beaune and Mercurey. The great wines and gastronomy, the charm of yesteryear, small streets and beautiful stone buildings in the surrounding villages, and numerous lakes in the shade of vast forests that are perfect for swimming or mushroom picking are a welcome reminder that we made the right choice – not to mention the music and theatre festivals that are held nearby each year.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

It is a stone house dating back to 1640 that we were lucky enough to purchase in its original condition. So, we were able to conserve as many original features as possible such as the stone walls, the cement tiles and the wooden beams. However, this did not prevent us from knocking down several walls to brighten up the house and make the most of the available space. Many windows have been added so that the view of the surrounding vineyards can be appreciated. Despite the help of some craftsmen, we did almost everything ourselves by willingly sacrificing our summer holidays three years in a row. We are very happy that we were able to introduce modern day comforts without compromising the old charms of the house.

What is its history ?

The house was a meeting place for the village winemakers who would gather here for lunch after working in the vineyards.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

This house is real refuge for us and the time we spend here is a much-needed interlude to our urban life in Paris which can be somewhat intense. We have also opted to have neither TV nor internet here as a way of trying a different daily routine with our children. We spend most of our time doing simple, relaxing things like reading, sleeping or eating. We like to organise big dinners in the garden and gather the people we love, prepare meals together, laugh, chat and (of course) drink good wines. That's why we never fail to visit our winemaker cousins who are always delighted to see us in their centuries-old cellars.

Places you would personally recommend

The maison Lameloise, which has three stars in the Michelin guide, is without a doubt a must-see. As is the Grenier à Sel near to Chagne just 11km from here, or the Petit Blanc which is 7km away in Charrecey. The restaurants of St Vincent Chalon sur Saône are also worth a mention and are only 13km from the house. A little further away (30km) are Beaune and all the villages of the great wines of Burgundy such as Aloxe Corton, Pommard and Meursault.
